Verity Shells

Verity Shells define a true EVextracellular vesicle size gate to standardize your flow cytometry experiments.

Why use Verity Shells?

Gates based on the scatter signals of polystyrene and silica beads select different sizes of EVsextracellular vesicles on different flow cytometers. Use Verity Shells to gate similar-sized EVsextracellular vesicles on different flow cytometers.

Verity Shells

How do Verity Shells work?

Light scattering is dictated by the refractive index distribution of a particle. EVsextracellular vesicles have a high refractive index shell and a low refractive index core, whereas polystyrene and silica beads have a uniformly distributed high refractive index. Consequently, polystyrene and silica beads scatter light more efficiently than similar-sized EVsextracellular vesicles. Moreover, because flow cytometers differ in optical configuration, gates based on polystyrene and silica beads select different sizes of EVsextracellular vesicles on different flow cytometers.

Light scattering properties of Verity Shells

Verity Shells are hollow organo silica beads with a refractive index distribution and light scattering properties similar to EVsextracellular vesicles. Therefore, a gate based on Verity Shells selects similar-sized EVsextracellular vesicles on different flow cytometers.

Applicability

Exometry offers two sizes of Verity Shells: 189 ± 2 nm and 374 ± 10 nm (mean diameter ± uncertainty). The Verity Shells can be used to set EVsextracellular vesicles size gates or to confirm that your flow cytometer can detect 189 nm and 374 nm EVsextracellular vesicles. Verity Shells are applicable to all flow cytometers with a scatter detector capable of detecting at least 100 nm polystyrene beads.
